Lock rekeying

Rekeying changes the pins inside your lock so the old keys stop working and a new key takes over. Same lock, new key, a lot cheaper than new hardware. Call (386) 853-3587.

What rekeying actually is

Inside every pin tumbler lock there’s a row of little pins at different heights. The key lifts them to a line and the cylinder turns.

To rekey, we take the cylinder out, push the old pins out with a follower (that blue tool in the photo holds the plug’s spot) and load new pins cut to a new key. Then we test it with the new key and make sure the old one doesn’t turn it anymore.

It takes a few minutes per lock. Most homes with three or four doors are done quickly.

Rekeying for landlords and managers

Between tenants

Rekey every time a tenant moves out. It’s cheaper than new locks and you know exactly who has keys. We can key each unit differently and give you an owner key that opens all of them.

When keys go missing

A tenant loses a key, a contractor doesn’t return one, a former employee still has one. Rekeying the affected locks fixes it the same day.

Keying several doors alike

Most houses end up with three or four different keys over the years, one for the front, one for the garage door, one for the back slider and an old one nobody remembers. When we rekey we can set every lock to the same key as long as they’re the same brand of keyway, or close to it.

If one lock is a different brand we can usually swap just that cylinder so it matches. You end up with one key on the ring instead of four and that’s the part people like most.

It also helps with spares. One key copied three times is a lot easier to keep track of than four different keys copied twice each. We cover all of Flagler, Volusia and Putnam counties from the shop on North Ocean Shore Blvd in Palm Coast.

Rekeying questions

Usually, yes. You keep the hardware and only pay for the pins and the labor.

Most pin tumbler locks can. Some cheap locks and some electronic ones can’t, and we’ll tell you if yours is one of those.

Yes. SmartKey cylinders reset a different way and we handle those too.

We cut new keys with the rekey. Ask for as many copies as you need.

Yes. If there’s no working key, we pick the lock or remove the cylinder another way, then rekey it.
