Fobs, remotes and push-to-start keys

A fob has two jobs. The buttons lock and unlock, and on push-to-start cars the fob is also the key the car looks for before it’ll start.

Both parts get programmed to the car. We use a programming tablet that connects to the car’s port under the dash, the photo above is one of those sessions.

Copy a fob or replace a lost one

Make a spare

If you have one working fob, adding a second one is straightforward. It’s the best time to do it, before you’re stuck with none.

Replace a lost one

Lost them all? We can still program new fobs to most cars. We’ll also delete the lost fob from the car so it can’t be used if someone finds it.

Small fixes that save a new fob

Battery

If the range is getting shorter or you have to press twice, the battery’s probably low. We swap it in a minute.

Shell and buttons

Cracked case or worn-out buttons? Often the electronics are fine and just need a new shell.

Push-to-start and proximity keys

How they work

A proximity key talks to the car while it’s in your pocket. The car looks for it when you touch the handle or press start. That’s why a weak battery in the fob can make the car say no key detected, even when it’s sitting right there.

What we can do

We program new proximity keys to most makes on site and remove lost ones from the car’s memory when the model allows it. If the fob still works but the case is broken we can move the insides to a new shell and that’s a lot cheaper than a new key.

Aftermarket remotes

Some cars came with a remote start or alarm installed after the sale, not by the factory. Those remotes are programmed to the add-on system, not the car so the process is different. Tell us when you call if there’s a second little remote on the ring, or a brand name on it that isn’t the car’s, and we’ll let you know if it’s something we can program.

Separate remotes start at $100, programming included.

Push-to-start and remote head keys depend on the car. Look yours up on the price page.

Key fob questions

Sometimes. Many online fobs are the wrong frequency or already locked to another car. Call first and we’ll tell you if yours will work.

Yes, while we’re there.

Yes, for most makes.

If your car has factory remote start, the new fob is programmed to run it too.
