Decorative handles and mortise sets

Some front doors have tall decorative handle sets with a mortise lock inside the door. They look great and they’re a little fussier than a standard knob.

When one wears out we can usually repair the mortise body or fit a new one to the existing cutout so you don’t need a new door. The photo shows one we fit and repaired.

Doing it once, doing it right

The install

A lock is only as good as the door it’s in. We check the door fits the frame, the latch lines up with the strike and the deadbolt throws all the way.

On most installs we put longer screws in the strike so they bite into the framing, not just the trim. That one detail makes a big difference when someone tries to kick a door.

The repair

A lot of “broken” locks just need a small fix. A latch that sticks because the door sagged, a handle that wobbles because a screw backed out, a deadbolt that won’t throw because the hole’s too shallow.

We’ll tell you whether a repair makes sense or whether the lock’s done.

Picking a deadbolt

Grade and build

Locks are graded by how much abuse they’re tested for. Grade 1 is the toughest, Grade 2 is a good choice for most homes. Look for a solid metal bolt and a reinforced strike.

Single or double cylinder

Single cylinder has a thumb turn inside, which is the safer choice for getting out fast in an emergency. Double cylinder needs a key on both sides, which some people want near glass, but check local rules and think about fire safety first.

Sliding doors and patio doors

Sliding glass doors are everywhere in Florida and their latches wear out. We replace worn latches and handles and we can add a secondary lock or a bar so the door can’t be lifted off its track.

We cover all of Flagler, Volusia and Putnam counties from the shop on North Ocean Shore Blvd in Palm Coast.
