Why a push bar needs to work every time
Exit devices let people get out fast without a key and they keep the door locked from outside. If the latch hangs up or the bar sticks, either the door doesn’t lock at night or it doesn’t open in an emergency. Neither’s okay.
Most problems are adjustment. A latch that drags, a rod that slipped, a closer that’s slamming the door so hard it bounces off the strike.
Installing a new device
The photo shows a push bar going in for a facility. We mount it, line up the latch with the strike, set the trim on the outside and make sure the cylinder works with the building’s keys.
If you’ve got a master key system, the new exit device cylinder gets keyed into it.
Exit device work
- Common problems
What goes wrong with exit devices
- Latch doesn't catch and the door stays unlocked
- Bar sticks when pushed
- Outside trim won't take the key
- Vertical rods out of adjustment
- Door slams or doesn't close all the way
Most of these are adjustments, not replacements.
Fire doors and inspections
Exit devices on fire-rated doors have to latch every time the door closes, and the fire marshal checks. If a device fails the inspection we can usually repair or adjust it before the follow-up visit. When a replacement is needed we match the rating on the door so the paperwork stays clean.
We also add outside trim so staff can get in with a key, set up dogging so the door stays unlatched during business hours and fix doors that were propped open so long the closer gave out. We cover all of Flagler, Volusia and Putnam counties from the shop on North Ocean Shore Blvd in Palm Coast.
Can you rekey an exit device?
Yes, the outside trim cylinder rekeys like any other lock.
Do you install panic hardware on new doors?
Yes, on doors that are prepped for it, and we can check whether yours is.
Why won't my push bar latch?
Usually the latch or strike is out of line, or the closer isn’t pulling the door shut. Both are adjustments we make on site.
